“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

~ Steve Jobs, Co-Founder of Apple

The mentality of a freelancer is very different from the mentality of someone who is bound to the 9 to 5 in a single job. Here are 2 of the most distinguising thoughts that a good freelancer carries around.

“I Work For Myself, Not the Client”

A freelancer is a person who offers their services temporarily to a client. A freelancer who has experience can set their prices and can take or reject clients as they choose.

They do not perceive that client as a kind of god, because they know that if it doesn’t work out with that client, they will be able to find business elsewhere (this is how a good freelancer thinks anyway).

“There Will Always Be More Work”

A good freelancer believes in their own self-worth and knows what they are able to offer their clients. There will always be clients who don’t appreciate the freelancer’s work, but then there will be the clients who do appreciate it.

These clients ensure that this freelancer always has work as they are more than happy to spread the news of a person who they think does a good job for a reasonable price. For a good freelancer, there will always be more work.

As an office employee, you might think that you don’t have the luxury of thinking that you work for yourself and not your company, or that there will be other jobs around, especially if it is your first job.

This is true to an extent, but this does not mean that you should believe that you have no value. The reason why a freelancer can be successful is because they believe in their value. Their belief in their value is expressed through their actions and as such, their value is also perceived to be high by the people who choose to hire them.

If you do not believe in your own value, no one is going to believe in it for you. Employees who spend too much time working in companies depend too much on their managers or superiors to decide whether they have value or not.

If you really want to telecommute, you need to show your company that you are an employee who they do not want to let go and that you are not afraid to leave the company if they do not realize that.
